It's unfortunate that Tom Rush's third album has such a strong reputation among rock listeners – not that it doesn't deserve it, but it sort of distracts them from this album, which was as natural a fit for rock listeners as any folk album of its era. Rush's debut album is filled with a hard, bluesy brand of folk music that's hard on the acoustic guitar strings and not much easier on his voice; he sings stuff like "Long John" and "If Your Man Gets Busted" with a deep, throaty baritone that's only a little less raw than John Hammond's was while doing his work of the same era. Rush had the misfortune to be equated with Bob Dylan, but he had a more easygoing and accessible personality that comes out on numbers here such as Woody Guthrie's "Do-Re-Mi" and Kokomo Arnold's "Milkcow Blues," which are thoroughly enjoyable and quietly (but totally) beguiling. Additionally, he isn't such a purist that he felt above covering a Leiber & Stoller number such as "When She Wants Good Lovin'."

It's not unusual for songwriters to run dry in the latter days of their careers, as they find it harder to come up with fresh ideas than they did in their salad days. Tom Rush is a rare example of this working in reverse. At the height of his career in the '60s, Rush was primarily an interpretive singer, performing either traditional folk numbers or the work of new voices in the folk music community (among them Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor).

An unfortunate reality for too many musicians—even those who are well-known—is that most of their audiences are aware of but a portion of their true work…their fullest capabilities. Recordings only tell part of the story, since artists often tour with groups that are never documented. And even those tours, for those fortunate enough to experience them, are often limited-run engagements—perhaps a few weeks in Europe here, a short tour of Japan there. Even in North America, given the vast distances that have become increasingly untenable with transportation costs, only those on one coast or the other, for example, might get the chance to catch a particular lineup and repertoire.

Rush's career reached an important milestone in 2011 – the 30th anniversary of the release of the band's masterpiece, Moving Pictures. Its U.S. sales of more than four million copies shows that this is the album that even casual fans like. (Even those who don't "like" Rush tend to like "Tom Sawyer.") The Canadian trio celebrated the 1981 best-seller with the Time Machine tour, featuring a performance of the album in its entirety.

"Moving Pictures" has become Rush's most successful studio album in the US with sales exceeding four million copies and a peak chart position of number three in Billboard. The band's complex songwriting and musical virtuosity reach new heights with this material despite the preponderance of shorter, more radio-friendly songs. Recorded and mixed at Le Studio north of Montréal, "Moving Pictures" includes the Rush signature tracks Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta and the band’s highly praised instrumental, YYZ, which earned Rush its first Grammy nomination. Rolling Stone named this album the third greatest progressive rock album of all time in a 2015 feature.

Here we go again! Rush are perhaps the only band that can get away with issuing a studio album and following it up with a live record of the tour for that same album, as is the case here. Is there any band on a major label out there that has as many live records as Rush does? People buy 'em. Lots of people. The reason is that yes, Rush fans are fanatics, and who wouldn't want that in a fan base? The other reason is that they issue new studio recordings so infrequently that fans are grateful to have live offerings documenting a particular tour. Another mystery is how, after 33 years, a band with this kind of longevity manages to stay focused and restless, changing gears and musical approaches to its core sound…

Neatly chopping up the band’s career into three segments, Rush’s Sector series of box sets breaks the Canadian prog rockers' early musical legacy into easy-to-digest morsels. On Sector 2, we find the band transitioning from its early developmental period into mainstream success with the albums A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and the live album Exit…Stage Left…
